This is the droid I was looking for.. BB-8

Very quiet on here due to ill-health, not much Lego building going on and no energy for posting. Hopefully this will change, with a tiny step forward, a mini droid polybag set.

Completed BB-8 polybag 40288

This is the promotional polybag set 40288 from Lego to mark Star Wars Day (May 4th), which I picked up unexpectedly in store last year. As I  mentioned when talking about the wee Millenium Falcon Microfighters set, I’m ambivalent about Star Wars but cute droids are cute droids, plus it was a quick build which was ideal.

Given that BB-8 is a spherical droid and Lego is better suited to, well, brick-shaped things, I was interested to see how they’d designed this with the minimal number of elements you find in the average polybag, and the answer was simple – build a cube and add round plates to the sides, with a domed head on top. Simple, but effective.

The head part is larger than images of the actual film droid, but still looks good. It’s on a pivot so wobbles back and forth, which is charming and adds personality. The base is also a round plate, so the finished droid sits at an angle, which then in turn makes the head angle, maybe to give the illusion of movement? Removing that bottom plate would make it stand solidly upright but that would be boring.

This was a  quick fun build of a cute character, even if said droid is a little large to display next to any 6 inch Star Wars action figures one might or might not possess.. (Yes, not big into Star Wars but come on, Obi Wan Kenobi played by Alec Guinness? Indispensable!)
